People can talk all they want about being good under pressure but it’s those stray , emergency phone calls that come through at 5:20pm on a Tuesday night that really prove what your made of.
On Tuesday morning my husband was complaining of a pain on the left side under his rib cage. I told him that he should call the doctor and get it checked out. Being the “guy” that he is, he decided to wait to see if it would go away. At noon he called and said he made
an appointment, they wanted him to come in right away but he decided to wait until a 3:20 appointment.
They discovered he had a mass in his intestines and sent him from Anamosa to Cedar Rapids Iowa. They told him to report directly to the ER and a surgeon would be waiting. He asked if he could call his wife to drive him and they told him no, that he needed to get there ASAP. He called me on the way and told me what was going on. He also wanted to know if I thought it would be okay if he pulled into the McDonald’s drive-thru really quickly because he was
hungry. I told him absolutely not!
I put a call out to family members and my sister-in-law was at my door in no time at all. My in-laws came too and stayed overnight with the kids. I made a dash to the ER in the pouring down rain. One of those nights when a semi passes you and you can’t see for ten seconds or more. I white knuckled it
all the way there and made it in time to meet the surgeon. They did surgery about 9:00pm and it only took about 45 minutes but it seemed like hours.
They still are uncertain of what they removed, they sent it off to pathology and we will know more in a week. The surgeon did say that he didn’t think it was cancerous and said we shouldn’t worry about it. My husband’s boss believes it is probably a wad of Mike and Ike’s candy – his favorite candy and I think maybe a wad of paper because he eats receipts, straw wrappers and other paper. Fourteen hours after surgery he was released and he is now at home,
resting comfortably but still in a lot of pain.
I was in a lot of pain too from sleeping upright in a chair all night but in the morning I climbed into the hospital bed with my husband and took a nice long nap! The hospital was massive, St. Luke’s, they even had valet parking for all of their patients. I’m glad it’s all behind us now; it’s just one of those things that you can’t possibly plan for.
When I was at the pharmacy picking up my husband’s prescriptions I remembered that the Monticello Express Newspaper was out so I walked over to the register and the clerk told me that I was on the front page. I was very pleased with the article which you can see here: http://monticelloexpress.atomicnewstools.com/pages/?p=4008#more-4008
When I picked up my son from school his teachers greeted me and asked if I was an author. I told them yes and three of them congratulated me and told me they were going to buy my book.
I also received an e-mail from the editor today telling me that the article is spreading like wildfire and that the local library called and will be getting in touch as they want me to do a book signing and also a non-profit group called the Beta club is going to get in touch. Today I received my third, 3-star review on Amazon. Things are really shaping up.
Have a great day passengers!
