of my life I have struggled with big, bad hair. In grade school I was called; Bird Nest, Brillo Pad and Fuzzy. People used to love to touch my hair, I’m not sure why, maybe they couldn’t believe it was real. I carried a large pick in my
back pocket in case a hair got out of place.
A babysitter once tried to straighten it by laying my head on an ironing board, covering it with tin-foil and ironing. That didn’t work. I had an aunt who tried to pull it back on the sides with combs once. That didn’t work
either. Nothing worked. I used to go to Capri Cosmetology College and let the newbies experiment on it. My fro was transformed into every color of the rainbow but it was still big and bad.
Hell I could have given Foxxy Cleopatra from the movie Goldfinger a run for the money! I could even jump into Municipal Swimming Pool and not get my hair wet. Eventually someone created flat irons and the rest is history. My husband and children are now the only people who get to “enjoy” my hair each morning when I get up.
So if you are having a bad hair day, I don’t want to hear about it because I have had bad hair years.
In the picture it appears that I am preforming the Heimlich maneuver on my baby sister (Crystal Bockenstedt-Wagner). But she seems to be enjoying the moment, perhaps thinking forward a few years and treasuring the times she would be able to share this atrocity with her friends.
Many of you are probably questioning the age
difference. In this picture I am 13 and my sister is 1. After I was born my mother had her tubes tide and then 12 years later went to the doctor and was told she had a tumor or was pregnant. My Dad and I were hoping for a tumor but instead Crystal came along.
She actually turned out quite normal considering the circumstances and
leads a successful life today with a daughter of her own. I must add that they both have beautiful hair.
This photo has been sent to the Ellen DeGeneres Show (just now) so maybe my “big hair” will give me my 15 minutes of fame. I think God owes me one for this.
Next stop is McDonalds; I desperately need a Big Mac and an Apple Pie after that blog.
