Most people have a preference when decorating for Christmas,
snowmen or Santa’s and they primarily decorate around one of the two themes. I just happen to be a snowman person. I have nothing against the big guy at all, in fact I love him but when it comes to decorations I find some of the statues and figurines quite creepy. Snowmen on the other hand are pretty much all the same.
Another reason I choose snowmen is because you don’t have to take
them down right away when Christmas is over. You can leave snowmen decorations out all winter if you want. So snowmen are also perfect for those with no ambition after Christmas.
Our house is one huge OSHA violation both inside and out. I have
piggybacked so many strings of lights outside that I expect to look out the window and see our porch up in flames one of these days. Yesterday (in my clogs nonetheless) when I was standing on the tippy top of the ladder, where it tells you not to stand, I was thinking about if I fell and if our insurance would cover me if they knew I wasn’t following the ladder rules. I’ve always been a rebel but I really was scared shitless standing on the top of the ladder. But oh well, it was so far down I would probably die anyway so it was silly to worry about.
I’m glad the decorations are finally up but now I dread the thought of having to put them all away after Christmas. But (big sigh) I just
need to relax and enjoy the season and not get too far ahead of myself. I do love sitting in the living room at night and looking at the tree all lit up. Years ago, BC (before children) we used to decorate a plastic palm tree. A regular Christmas tree is so much more meaningful.
When I was a kid I can remember picking out live Christmas trees
and getting them home. They always smelled so good. My Dad has kind of a short fuse so putting up the tree was always a stressful time, especially if it wasn’t straight or if it didn’t fit in the stand right. One year he got so mad he tied ropes around the tree and NAILED the ropes to the floor – right straight into the carpet!
A few years ago a neighbor played a nasty trick on my Dad. After
he picked out the perfect tree at a local live tree sale he took it home and had his tree standing straight and tall in the tree stand when his phone rang. “Mr. Wagner, this is John – the guy you just bought the tree from. Let me begin by apologizing, the tree I sold you was treated with chemicals and it isn’t safe for you to have in your home. If you bring it back I would be happy to exchange it for you. I am so sorry.” My father was livid but he took the tree down and drove it back to the tree place.
The man working at the tree place was very confused when my Dad
told him about the phone call and he said none of the trees were treated with chemicals. My Dad was not impressed as he hauled the same tree back home again, realizing he had been pranked. I can just visualize my Dad talking to himself as he drove home, shaking his head in disgust and thinking about what he was going to do to the person that got him.
That was one Christmas I will never forget and I wasn’t even there!
