One thing I dislike about Facebook is the fact that when people
die their profiles live on. I think it’s a good thing for a while; it helps
people grieve as they can say whatever they have to say on the person’s page. But after a while I think the page should be taken down.
You can fill out a form telling Facebook of a person death by
filling out a form listing the dead persons full name, name listed on the
account, e-mail listed on the account, URL of the profile you would like to report, your relationship to the person-immediate, extended family or
non-family or other. Then you have to send proof of death in the form of an obituary or news article. The only action you can request is for Facebook to memorialize the account.
A memorialized account is one that has all of the information
deleted off the information tab. People can still post pictures to the account but no status updates can occur and the ability to search for the person is wiped out unless you are already a confirmed friend. There are other changes as well. But in a nutshell – a profile lives forever on Facebook!
I don’t like that, it’s creepy. I also don’t like it when friends/family take over a person’s account after they have died and send out status updates. Just today I saw an update from a friend who died months ago. I think it’s disrespectful to post things to a person’s account after they are gone. I also know of another person who died months ago and Facebook keeps suggesting I make this person my friend. In some
situations I’m sure people never contact Facebook to let them know a person has passed on.
I suppose a person with a twisted sense of humor could have a pretty good time taking over the account of a person who was dead. You could
post things like “cloud hopping” or “it’s really hot here.” You could also
check into different places you wanted to haunt. But that’s just not right; it should be against the law to take over the posts of a dead person.
I don’t deal with death very well and I don’t appreciate seeing status updates and friend requests from dead people. Hopefully these people are
resting in peace – I just wish their Facebook accounts would do the same.
While we are on the topic of Facebook I MUST tell you about something new you can do – (and I’m not saying I’ve done it!) As we all know,
people frequently send out pictures of babies in their status updates and some people find this highly annoying. Unbaby Me is new, it’s a Facebook program that will search for key words and will then replace pictures of babies with anything you choose. If you love bacon choose that or kittens or puppies or whatever trips your trigger. Anytime a baby pictures gets sent you won’t have to see it – you will see bacon or whatever it is that you love. Some people find this cruel but I think it’s pretty funny.
