Yesterday I took a trip to the ‘convenient care’ department at Finley Hospital and they conveniently moved me to the ER. I
learned that they don’t treat most pain related incidents in convenient care. But no worries, after three hours it was discovered that I have stones and not the kind you can skip across a body of water. I was surprised at the diagnosis as I figured I had accidently swallowed a knife that was stuck in my left side.
When the doctor left my husband said he knew of many truck drivers that had kidney stones. He said they are sedentary and drink lots of coffee and that’s probably what causes it. He then raised his eyebrows
and looked at me. I guess I would be guilty of drinking a lot of coffee and I guess I don’t get nearly the amount of exercise that I should but I thought comparing me to a truck driver was rather harsh.
I exited with the same pain I entered with. Apparently there isn’t much they can do for you unless the stones are really big. The kids were starving so we stopped at a McDonald’s Playland on the way home. I ordered a salad as I was ready to start doing healthy things – anything
to end the pain and suffering.
A woman approached our table as were eating and I was ready for her to go on and on about Mac’s beautiful hair as that happens all the time. But this time she went on and on about my hair and insisted I tell her
exactly what I did to get it that way. Seriously?! Let’s see, put gel in the
back and scrunch, next straighten the front now lay on a hospital gurney for three hours, viola, you have fabulous hair! Unbelievable.
So starting today I will continue to drink lots of water, take my cranberry pills and vitamins and I just might take a walk and
cut back on the coffee. Maybe.
So now back to the hair. You will not think, for even a moment, that you are having a bad hair day if you know the story about Shanya Isom. She has a condition causing finger nails to grow in place of hair. She is the only person in the world with this condition and is receiving treatment in Baltimore. She’s only 28 years old and her medical bills are astronomical already. Doctors can’t figure this one out. Her body produces hair follicles at twelve times the normal rate resulting in nails instead of hair.
This makes kidney stones and messy hair seem like no big deal.
