The word “gay” has been around a long time – like since the 1600’s and back then it meant “happy” as in “don we now our gay apparel.” In the 1900’s it became a word to describe things associated with homosexuality. In the 20th century LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual) groups decided the word would be used to describe people that were attracted to the same sex or who had different sexual preferences. So now the LGBT community owns the word and gets to define the definition? Says who?
I grew up in the 80’s and back then (and still today) when referring to an inanimate object or subject that we didn’t like we would say,“that is so gay.” We weren’t referring to homosexuals we were simply using the word to describe things that we thought were stupid. We said it first
in the 80’s – before the word got ‘officially’ connected to homosexuality in the 1900’s. That was one of our big phrases right up there with grody to the max; gag me with a spoon, wicked cool and totally tubular.
How can it be possible for someone to take over the meaning of the word
“gay” and then flip it around to make us look like bad people?
If we wanted to offend the LGBT crowd I can assure you that there
are plenty of harsher words out there. “That is so gay” was used to describe bad science experiments and it was a phrase to describe Sunday dinners with the family or homework, things we didn’t like. But again it had nothing to do with gay people.
To see these public service announcements just makes me mad. No
one owns the word “gay” and it isn’t right that we are being told how to use it so we don’t offend others especially when it’s clear that our intent was never to offend in the first place. It’s just a phrase. Maybe I want the word “gay” to mean “happy” and now the LGBT has taken that definition away. So gay can never mean happy again? Why does the LGBT community have the right to take the definition of the word away and why does the government back them by producing commercials to change our thinking? That is so gay! (You knew I would say it
Why doesn’t the government do public service announcements about
the proper use of you, your and you’re? How about an announcement telling people that the word is ASK and not pronounced AX. How about the word bitch or the F-word, many find those words offensive so why aren’t there public service announcements telling people not to say them? We need grammar police way worse than word police.
I contemplated not posting this blog because some may find it offensive but I’m sick of “blogging” on egg shells for fear that someone will be hurt. I have the right to my opinion and frankly I’m sick of having to balance every word and to “think before I speak.” My intent is not to offend anyone.
I have nothing against the LGBT community except I am kind of
pissed that they are making us look bad by doing this. They could have picked any word they wanted but they picked “gay” even though it was already being used in a different context by the 80’s kids who are now adults. Stop being so damn sensitive – it isn’t always about you and your sexual preferences. You took our word, destroyed our phrase and made us look sexist. I hope you’re happy now.
