So let me get this straight. Iowa passed a law which will allow
honorably discharged veterans to have the word “Veteran” written on their driver’s license. This law goes into effect in July and was signed by Governor Terry Branstad last year. This new ‘law’ will allow veterans to gain discounts in the state of Iowa using only their driver’s license or ID rather than carrying around official military documents.
That sounds really great doesn’t it? Well don’t answer that yet,
let me finish. You cannot have the “Veteran” designation added to your CURRENT license or ID card unless it’s your first license. Humm, let me do the math. If a person is getting their first driver’s license in Iowa, odds are they are between the ages of 16 and 17 and probably NOT yet a veteran. If it’s not your first Iowa license then you MUST wait until your card’s renewal period. Say what?! If a Veteran just received a five year license and let’s say that Veteran is 65 years old, he/she will have to wait until they are 70 to get the “Veteran” designation on their license. Apparently the DOT loses money when they reissue licenses and the $7.00 to $9.00 they lose just isn’t worth it. Can you flippin believe this?! But wait, it gets worse.
Yesterday the state of Iowa printed over 100 licenses/ID’s for the children of illegal immigrants thanks to the new Obama immigration policy.
Now I’m not saying that these people don’t deserve to have a license I’m saying I think it’s ridiculous that we would even bat an eye at the cost to put the “Veteran” designation on the driver’s license of a vet. After all the vets put everything on the line for us, their lives included and that isn’t worth a few dollars to the state of Iowa?! They made it possible for the children of illegal immigrants to live here in the first place. These kids get a license, a free pass because they were in the right place at the right time. The vets were in all the wrong places from the start and continue to get the short end of the stick. That isn’t fair and it isn’t right. I’m not even a vet and I’m pissed off about it.
Do you know why identification is even necessary for Iowa Veterans to receive discounts? The reason is because there are actually people
in this world that pretend to be vets when they aren’t. But you know maybe they’re onto something. There were also illegal aliens pretending to be American Citizens and now they’re American Citizens.
