Thanksgiving so the Snow Birds can be at a warmer climate before the snow flies. There is no official meal time there, we eat all day long and no one ever goes
home hungry. It’s warm and cozy and something I look forward to every year.
The children also look forward to it as they will get to open a gift, the very first Christmas gift of the season. With that said, it is my duty as a mother to go over the rules and scenario’s so they don’t embarrass me. At the party each child (and adult) is seated in a folding chair in the center of the room when they open their gift. With everyone watching and taking pictures it’s like having your own five minutes of fame…or five minutes of shame if your child doesn’t react to their gift properly.
Me: What do you say when you get your present today? Kids: Thank You. Very good! What if you get a really bad present that you hate, what do you say? Kids: Thank You. Very good! What if you get something that you already have, what do you say? Kids: Thank You. That’s great guys and don’t forget to
But here is what they are really thinking:
Me: What do you say when you get your present today? Kids: Thanks for this present I hope I like it. Me: What if you get a really bad present that you hate, what do you say? Kids: Thanks for this really stupid present, I would cry right now but my mom is watching and I know there will be hell to pay when we get home if I throw a fit. Me: What if you get something that you already have, what do you say? Kids: Thank you for this present that I already
have, hopefully you included a gift receipt and hopefully my Dad will stop at Wal-Mart on the way home so I can exchange it for something I don’t have. I
really want to tell you that I already have this but mom is giving me the evil eye so I better just sit here with this fake smile on my face and keep my mouth
I try to teach my kids to always be honest but this situation is a little different. It’s one of those gray areas that gets all mixed-up with the red and green.
Yesterday my daughter was singing Walking in a
Winter Wonderland. My favorite verse was:
Later on we’ll “perspire” as we dream by the fire, to face unafraid the plans that we made….
Have a good day friends!
