me know. Yesterday I received a phone call giving me something to blog about. The call was from my Dad and he was pissed off. Not the knee jerk reaction kind of pissed off, the kind of pissed off that festers inside for years and years. My Dad is a Veteran and he’s not happy with Veterans Day. How could he possibly be pissed off about a day set aside just for him? Well let me tell you.
This year Veterans Day falls on a Sunday and my father will be on
a beach in Punta Cana but most years that’s not the case. Veterans Day is a Federal Holiday meaning banks and post offices are closed (Monday) and the employees get paid even if they’ve never been in the military. The holiday should be for people who served in the military but it’s not, it’s for everyone.
For the majority of my father’s life he had to work on Veterans Day. He wasn’t able to use the post office or stop at the bank because those
people had the day off – celebrating what was supposed to be a day to honor him. He didn’t feel very honored when he was working and many others were off and getting paid for it. Many Vets work in the private sector and they don’t get a paid day off for Veterans Day.
My Dad would talk to people who were spending the day fishing,
taking a long weekend or just hanging out with family while he was earning a living trying to feed his own family. Why is it fair that people who have not been in the military get a paid day off? It’s not fair and I don’t blame him for being pissed off about it. In fact, I bet there are a lot of pissed off Vets on Veterans Day.
I know I’m just adding fuel to the fire here but in doing some research I found out that there is a law regarding Veterans Day in Iowa, it was
signed by Governor Chet Culver in 2010. And it’s the stupidest law ever. If you are not pissed off already you will be after you read this.
Here it is;
HF 2197 requires an employer to give each employee who is a military veteran holiday time off on November 11 for Veterans Day if the
employee would otherwise be required to work on that day, unless providing time off would impact public health or safety or would cause the employer significant financial or operational disruption.
The employer may choose whether it is paid or unpaid time off and must notify the employee at least 10 days prior to Veterans Day. If the employer cannot provide time off for all employees who requested it, the employer must deny time off to the fewest number of employees needed to protect public health and safety or to maintain minimum operational capacity.
The employee must give the employer at least one month’s advance written notice of his or her intent to take off Veterans Day. To qualify as a military veteran, the employee must provide the employer with a federal certificate of release or discharge from active duty or a similar official federal document. HF 2197 passed the House on a vote of 97-2.
Say what?! Isn’t that one bullshit, half-ass law?! So in a nutshell the employer can do whatever in the hell they want and the Vet has to
jump through hoops and give written notice one month in advance EVENTHOUGH the employer has on file that they are a veteran and even then they still may not get the day off. And there is a possibility that they will get the day off without pay which is more like a punishment than anything. That’s not right. Is this how we should treat our Veterans?
Veterans should be able to COUNT ON having EVERY Veteran’s Day
off – not putting in for it and then finding out within ten days of the date if they will get it off or not. They should be able to plan that day a year in advance if they want to. They put their lives on the line for us and we can’t give them ONE fricken paid day off without employers making them do push-ups and beg for it?
Now I’m pissed off too! I see all these posts/ads/articles about certain restaurants giving Vets free meals on Veteran’s Day and that’s fantastic
– especially for the older guys who are retired but what about the younger Vets who are working and can’t go to a restaurant for a free meal that they deserve because they have to work that day?
I’m sure there are businesses that employ Veterans and happily
give them a day off with pay. If these businesses exist I want to hear about them so I can thank them – they deserve to be recognized so please let me know who they are.
I’m posting this today so everyone is aware that Veterans Day is
upon us. I also wanted to take the opportunity to tell my Father (before he leaves for vacation) that I’m sorry he had to work all those years without getting Veterans Day off. That really sucks. I didn’t realize it was such a sore spot but now I can see why. This needs to change.
